Ежедневное потребление 700–1620 мг DHA снижает жировые отложения, включая жир на животе, у людей с диабетом. Рыбий жир также уменьшает воспаление, связанное с ожирением.

Избыток жира в организме увеличивает выработку воспалительных цитокинов, в том числе интерлейкина 1 бета (ИЛ-1 бета), интерлейкина 6 (ИЛ-6), и фактор некроза опухоли-альфа (TNF-альфа).
